The 9th edition of the DTU PES Summer School concluded successfully, hosting 70 participants from 25+ countries selected from over 150 applications. The 2026 edition was led by Lesia, alongside co-organizers Johanna Vorwerk, Spyros Chatzivasileiadis, and myself. Speakers included Ricardo Bessa, Luiz Barroso, Thomas Dalgas Fechtenburg, Henrik Sandberg, Sonja Wogrin, Martin Bichler, Sijia Geng, Panagiotis Papadopoulos, Lena Kitzing, Lesia Mitridati, and Johanna Vorwerk. Participant feedback was outstanding: 98% would recommend the school, and 99% rated the overall organisation as good or excellent.

Welcome to our new PhD student, Rasmus Thorgaard [ DTU | LinkedIn ]. Rasmus is an industrial PhD in partnership with the Danish Utility Regulator (Forsyningstilsynet), co-funded by Innovation Fund Denmark. With an economics background from the University of Copenhagen, he will develop algorithms for "detection of intraday market distortions" with a particular focus on capacity hoarding. He will be co-supervised by Casper Bjerregaard (Forsyningstilsynet), Lesia, and myself.

Welcome to our new PhD student, Gloria Tintoré Vidal [ DTU | LinkedIn ]. Gloria joins the Data Unlocked project, funded by EUDP, and will work on "privacy-preserving data sharing for line congestion forecasting" with a primary use case in collaboration with Energinet, ENFOR A/S, and PowerLabDK, and additional use cases with Watts, Green Power Denmark, and Neogrid Technologies. She will be co-supervised by Lesia and myself.

Granted! Our project Nordic-SEC has been funded by Innovation Fund Denmark under the Grand Solutions Programme. The project aims to close the loop in Nordic TSO coordination for enhanced grid security and cost efficiency, and will run from April 2026 to March 2030 in collaboration with Nordic RCC and Energinet. The project is led by Lesia and me as co-PIs. Two PhD positions are upcoming. More details on the Projects page.

Funding granted! Our project “Data Unlocked: Privacy Preservation, Public Sharing, and Added Value Creation” has been awarded funding by EUDP. The total grant amounts to 9.5 million DKK (approximately 1.27 million EUR), with 61% allocated to the EMA section. We are excited to collaborate with our industrial partners: Energinet, NeoGrid, Enfor, Green Power Denmark, Watts, PowerLab DK, and Radius. Looking forward to embarking on this important project!

Funding granted! Our Industrial PhD project with Energinet has been awarded funding by Innovation Fund Denmark. Under the project titled “Dynamic and Multi-Area Reserve Dimensioning for Balancing of the Electricity Grid”, Valdemar Søgaard will pursue his PhD, supervised by Lesia Mitridati (DTU), Thomas Dalgas (Energinet), Anders Runge Walther (Energinet), and myself.

In the last two weeks, I presented our recent work on the P90 requirement of Energinet (Danish system operator) for bidding in Nordic ancillary service markets at DTU PES Summer School 2024, in an invited panel at PSCC 2024 in Paris, and as a keynote speaker at European Energy Markets (EEM 2024) conference in Istanbul. The 7th edition of DTU PES Summer School was organized in the period of May 27-31, 2024 with 60 attendees from all over the world (selected among 160+ applicants) and 6 external lecturers, including David Newbery (Univ of Cambridge), Pierluigi Mancarella (Univ of Melbourne), Line Roald (UW Madison), Mahnoosh Alizadeh (UC Santa Barbara), Rodrigo Moreno (Univ of Chile), Carleton Coffrin (Los Alamos National Lab), and four speakers from DTU. Yannick Heiser [ LinkedIn ] joined the EMA section as a PhD student to work on "Data-driven optimization and machine learning for operation and control of PtX hybrid plants" over the next three years, being supervised by Farzaneh Pourahmadi, Lesia Mitridati, and myself (primal supervisor). Farzaneh Pourahmadi [LinkedIn] joined the EMA section as a researcher. She received her PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Iran, in 2019. Before joining DTU, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen Business School. During the next three years, she will be mostly working on her DFF project "Combining learning and optimization for faster green transition".

Bob Pepin [LinkedIn] joined the EMA section as a postdoctoral fellow. He received his PhD degree in Mathematics from the University of Luxembourg in 2018. Before joining DTU, he was a senior AI specialist at Alexandra Institute, Denmark. During the next one year, he will be working on "data-driven operation of power systems and digitalization".

Arega Getaneh Abate [ Homepage ], the recipient of the EuroTechPostdoc2 Programme fellowship, joined the EMA section as a postdoctoral fellow. He received his PhD degree in Mathematical Methods of Economics, Finance, and Actuarial Sciences, from Brescia University, Italy, in 2021. During the next 2 years, he will be working on "AI-assisted electricity market design for sustainability", in collaboration with Maryam Kamgarpour (EPFL) and me.

Funded! Project ViPES2X (Fully AI-driven Virtual Power Plant for Energy Storage and Power-to-X) granted funding by the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP). The total funding is 1,126,000 euro, out of which the EMA section receives 150,000 euro. HOMEY project has been granted funding by EDUP (total budget: 8.7 million DKK). We will develop a range of H2-driven portfolio management and business models for hybrid power plants (electrolyzers+wind+PV+battery) under uncertainty, and demonstrate our solutions in a real pilot of Siemens Gamesa in Denmark.

Bennevis Crowley joined the ELMA group as a PhD student, funded by the FLEX-CEC project (EUDP) and DTU Elektro. He will be primarily working on "privacy-based market deisgn for energy communities".

Our project entitled "Sustainable P2X Business Model" has been granted funding by Energy Cluster Denmark and Ørsted (total budget: 800,000 DKK).

Yannick Werner joined the ELMA group of DTU as a PhD student. Yannick received his BSc and MSc degrees in Industrial Engineering and Management from TU Berlin. He will work on systemic risk analysis in integrated multi-carrier energy systems. His project is funded by DTU alliance programme that promotes collaboration with NTNU (Norway). Yannick will be supervised by Prof. Ruud Egging (NTNU) and myself.

Funded! Innovation Fund Denmark funded our joint industrial PhD proposal with IBM on "Investment Models for Flexibility Trading".

Adriano Arrigo started his PhD at the University of Mons, Belgium. Together with Prof. François Vallée and Dr. Jean-François Toubeau, I will co-supervise his PhD work on the applications of distributionally robust optimization to power systems.

Prof. Shmuel Oren (University of California, Berkeley) gave a talk on "mobilizing grid flexibility for renewables integration through topology control and dynamic thermal rating" at the ELMA group of DTU.

Corey Kok joined us as a Postdoctoral Fellow. We will be working together on market design for demand response resources and integrated energy systems. Before joining the ELMA group, Corey was a PhD student at The University of Auckland, New Zealand.

After the two successful summer schools in 2016 and 2017, The ELMA Group is pleased to invite PhD and MSc students, postdocs and researchers in industry to the 3rd DTU CEE Summer School 2018, which will focus on “Modern Optimization in Energy Systems”.
